Chapter 8

There was another sound, more than a slap. Sandra had to clap her hands over her mouth to stop herself from screaming. Then Georgina gave a terse order and there were clattering heels as she walked off.

“Get him out of here. We’ll see you in court, you piece of shit.”

Sandra had heard enough. She didn’t want to hear more. She hung up and sat staring at her phone. Georgina had threatened her ex-husband. Brad’s life was in danger if he didn’t bow to her.

Sandra was now looking at their divorce very differently. She couldn’t believe what she'd heard. But Georgina had dug her own grave.

Now Sandra just needed to find Brad and make sure he was still in one piece. Nothing else mattered now.

Picking up her phone, Sandra dialed the airport. If she was lucky, she could get on the next flight.

Brad’s chest was hurting badly. His ribs must have been broken again. It was tough to breathe. He knew he needed to get to the hospital but he didn’t want to admit that he'd been had. Again.

He just wanted to go back to the hotel and hide. Then he would go back to finding Sandra. She was alive. She'd called him. That had to mean something. Brad wanted to hear her voice, know she was okay.

He wasn’t angry at her anymore. He just wanted to hear her, see her. Anything.

His cell phone started ringing again as he stepped out the shower. Cursing, Brad wrapped a towel around his waist and answered it. His heart leapt when he saw Sandra’s number flashing.

He answered.

“Sandra?”

“Hey, Brad.” Sandra sounded nervous. “Are you okay?”

“Never mind me. I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” Brad almost slipped on the floor as he paced. “Where the fuck are you?”

“I’m in the lobby.”

“Of the hotel?”

“Yes. But the staff won’t let me come up. Said you didn’t want to be disturbed.”

Brad didn’t care about that anymore. He'd said that earlier but now that Sandra was here, that was going out the window. He practically ran into the bedroom and grabbed his clothes.

“I’ll come and get you. Don’t go anywhere.”

He hung up and dragged on his pants and shirt, barely remembering to put his shoes on. Then he ran to the elevator, pacing around as it went down to the ground floor. He wanted to see her. After the last couple of days, seeing Sandra was all Brad wanted to do. And he still wanted to know why she'd left. What had gone on?

What had he done?

Brad saw Sandra as soon as he stepped out of the elevator. She was by the desk with her suitcase, looking out of place in her jeans and a baggy sweater. But it was her. She was really here. She turned as Brad approached and didn’t push him away as he hugged her, wrapping her into his arms. If anything, she clutched onto his shirt just as tightly and gave a little sob.

He'd missed her. Badly. Brad hadn’t realized it was possible to miss a woman like that.
